Grindhouse Movie Theaters

Back in the early 1960's and 1970's there was a special kind of movie theater called a Grindhouse Theater. When one would go to a Grindhouse Theater, they stayed for 2 films, also known as a "double feature." The kind of films that were showed in a Grindhouse theater were called Exploitation films. Exploitation films were mainly filled with violence, action, nudity, and over the top gore. Some Exploitation films have created cult followings. Above is a picture of what the outside of a Grindhouse Theater looks like.

  2. Really cool, I had no idea of any such thing. Would be cool to see a retro grindhouse open up somewhere and show some old movies like "creature from the black lagoon" or "the birds".

  3. Craig, wow I never knew there was different kinds of theaters for different movies. You look at movie theaters in the past and the present and I bet they where pobaly different just because of technology. I like at least in the past it was a double film when you went to see a movie. Today's movies are to expensive and they usually stink.

  4. Wow, I guess this is where all the "dirty people" would go see a movie back in the day? I didn't know that was how double features first came about. This is a very cool post. I take it the first pornographic movies were shown in theaters like these. In my old neighborhood in Philly, they use to have a theater like this one on Frankford ave. It since has closed down because of drug dealing. Go figure.

  5. Ugh! I didn't know that there were different theaters just for the over-the-top gore movies. My children enjoy these types of movies, but I prefer the typical comedies, romance, and action films.

  6. Good post Craig. Yeah I remember a few Grindhouse theaters when I was real young but I never went to one and saw the features. They have since all disappeared, but I think the whole film industry has contracted a bit. A lot of the small and single screen theaters have gone out of business. The only thing left are these giant megaplexes that only play the next greatest Hollywood blockbuster. I know that recently Quentin Tarantino released a film called Grindhouse that was a throw back to the old films. It was even a double feature, but it did not do well at the box office. Maybe if there were still Grindhouse theaters it would have done better.

  7. Movies and Cults, wow very informative. The Grindhouse looks scary and dark. Not much of my liking however people who were into it must of loved it.

  8. Talk about a violent society in America. It seems America thrives in violent films more than anything.
